I direct Cancer Guide Consultations, which provides counseling to cancer patients on their options in conventional and complementary therapies. I am not a physician, and I do not prescribe or recommend treatments. I do offer detailed information and support to help cancer patients make informed decisions and develop an integrative program consonant with the best medical advice, recent research findings, and their own personal needs and beliefs. I have been providing this service for cancer patients for over a decade and have accumulated a substantive base of knowledge about both mainstream therapies (including cutting-edge experimental approaches) and complementary treatments (including nutrition, mind-body, and alternative therapies), which patients can utilize to their benefit. My experience suggests that patients often are most successful when they combine the best of conventional oncology with carefully chosen complementary treatments. I have been honored to assist many patients whose quality of life has been dramatically improved; some of these patients have fully recovered or survived long beyond conventional medical expectations.

I am a member of the advisory board and the faculty for the CancerGuides (TM) training program, sponsored by the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, which was developed by the Center’s founder and director, James S. Gordon, M.D. (Dr. Gordon is chairman of the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy.) CancerGuides (TM) trains health care professionals of all stripes to provide psychospiritual and informational support to cancer patients, with a special emphasis on integrative therapies. I am also an advisory board member for the Center for Mind-Body Medicine’s annual Comprehensive Cancer Care (CCC) conference, which the New Yorker magazine called, “the most important alternative medical meeting in America.” CCC has been co-sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), among other foundations and organizations. In my advisory capacity, I have helped to develop many of CCC’s sessions over the past four years. I am assistant editor for the new peer-reviewed medical journal, Integrative Cancer Therapies, edited by Keith I. Block, M.D., a recognized leader in the field of integrative cancer care. The journal will begin publication in March, 2002.

My interest in cancer and immunity began in the early 1980s, when I was the staff writer for the Cancer Research Institute in New York, a funding organization devoted to research in cancer immunology and immunotherapy. I have since authored many books, including Your Defense Against Cancer and The Immune Power Personality. I have also coauthored The Type C Connection with Lydia Temoshok, Ph.D., Self-Nurture and Healing Mind, Healthy Woman with Alice D. Domar, Ph.D.; For Thou Art With Me: The Healing Power of Psalms, with Rabbi Samuel Chiel; and Joe Torre’s Ground Rules for Winners, with New York Yankee manager Joe Torre. My most recent book, Mind-Body Unity: A New Vision for Mind-Body Science and Medicine, will be published by Johns Hopkins University Press. I have also coauthored, with psychiatrist Jonathan R. Davidson, M.D. of Duke University Medical Center, The Anxiety Book, to be published in 2003 by Riverhead Books. I am a regular contributor to Natural Health magazine and Advances in Mind-Body Medicine, and have written for many other publications, including New York Magazine and Tikkun.
